Ashikos

Ashikos are cone shaped drums, usually headed with goat hide, inspired by the traditional designs of West Africa, but with several innovative features.  Some have observed that the voice of our ashikos accent and compliment other types of drums in the group circle -- bridging the lows of the dun-dun, for example, with the highs of the djembe -- while bringing distinctly vibrant bass, midrange and high tone voices of its own to the sonic mix.

A variety of sizes accommodate every level of ability.   They are user-friendly percussion, featuring:

  • Traditional Mali rope tensioning system.
  • Top rim precisely rounded, unlike many drums of lower quality, affording hours of play without hand strain.
  • Unique, exquisitely lathe-crafted shape eliminates excess shell weight and features a built-in neck ring collar to prevent tuning slippage.
  • Top rings set low for additional ease of play
  • A variety of soft and hard woods including pine, poplar, cherry, walnut and birch.

NEW!

Greener Drums
(with a personal twist):

You may now choose from a selection of unique, recycled or re-used, and vintage materials -- to create a more environmentally appropriate drum in keeping with modern sensibilities.

Your visually and acoustically exquisite drum can now also be boldly earth friendly.

In addition, selecting materials to re-use from your own memorabilia can give additional meaning to your drum.  Consider wood from a favorite childhood dresser or desk, rope from your first sail boat, or a hand-me-down drum head saved from your best friend's first drum.

If you are in the Puget Sound region, order your drum locally to save energy-waste from unnecessary transportion.
